My Teen’s Bedroom and I

Interior designing of teenagers’ bedroom, is a feat which can be accomplished only by getting your teenager participate. Parents have to break this myth that their son or daughter is too irrational or non-responsive. Parents and teenagers usually have to overcome generation gap, for children have different interests and taste. Sit down with your child and allocate a budget and then fit in the most important items that are needed for the bedroom. If you can afford it, fine! Otherwise let the teen pitch in. This will help the teen to own the project and put in his/her energy, interest and enthusiasm combined with creativity and progressive ideas.

Color and design are different with boys and girls. Both love bold and colorful rooms but their choice of colors is not same. Girls enjoy pink and lavender colors. Boys go with blue or maroon. Suggest ideas to make them feel that bedroom setting is their choice. This bedroom is their comfort and protection zone; a place to be proud of and for hang out and sleepovers for friends. Bed sheets, pillow covers and blanket must complement each other and also blend with the colors of walls and ceiling and also with the floor rug.

When it comes to furniture, the bed size should be in proportion with room size. No compromise on quality of bed. Teenagers rough it. Table lamp always adds a unique touch to the room atmosphere. Size should be medium or small with bright and dim light options. A fuzzy rug with bold colors spices up the bedroom. If you are living in a warm state then avoid wall to wall carpeting. Bare floors help keep room temperature low and comfortable. In cold states, carpeting keeps the bedroom warm and cozy.  Study table should have room for computer, mementos, trophies, books, pens, pencils and a jewelry holder for girls. Stuffed animals and dolls from childhood are a girl’s good companions in the bedroom. Boys go for sports items and pin ups. A bulletin board is a helpful item. It protects your walls from excessive nail hammering and graffiti which can devalue your home. Lastly, music instruments and electronic gadgets should be placed near the bed but around corners. Avoid keeping unnecessary things on the floor, this helps keep the room neat and clean and also saves you from tripping over and banging into items. The bedroom should be clutter free. Customized look is appealing.
